Project Overview

This project, recently completed in Woodbridge, NJ was a pilot test for a larger planned remedy at the site. The soil mixing at this site will begin after the saw cutting and removal of at grade improvements and the installation of erosion and sedimentation controls. The top 4 feet of overburdened soil was removed and stockpiled on-site. Excavation support in the form of trench boxes was used to support the excavation and define the test area. Soil mixing was performed via bucket by Terra Nova using a mixture of Portland Cement and ground-granular blast furnace slag at a 3-5% rate, to a depth of 20 feet below grade surface. Following satisfactory geotechnical QC results, the swell was managed onsite and the area restored with dense grade aggregate and paving.

Project Highlights

  • Excavation and in-situ soil (ISS) treatment performed in two 20 ft. x 20ft. areas.

  • Excavation and off-site disposal of top 4ft of soil over ISS treatment areas.

  • Mixing soil from 4 to 20 feet below grade with a mixture of Portland cement and ground-granulated blast furnace slag.

  • Installation of trench boxes for excavation support and mixing area definition

  • Close coordination with project engineer regarding mix development, application, and reaction times.
