PROJECT SUMMARY

SOIL EXCAVATION & RESTORATION

Upstate New York

Client: Confidential

Date: September 2019 – December 2019

Project Highlights

  • Excavation, transport, and disposal via rail of 2,400 tons of impacted soil.

  • Management of 21,000 gallons of groundwater.

  • Surface restoration with concrete, asphalt, and vegetation.

Overview

Terra Nova Solutions was tasked with removing chlorinated impacted soil and groundwater from survey defined locations at the site. Each defined area was excavated to 10-13 feet below grade using a slide rail shoring system for excavation support.  A total of 2,400 tons of soil was removed from the excavation stockpiled, tested and subsequently transported off-site. A total of 100 tons of soil was segregated for hazardous off-site disposal.  During the excavation, Terra Nova handled 21,000 gallons of water which was pre-treated and disposed of in the on-site water treatment system.  Following excavation we installed a demarcation fabric and restored the site with imported backfilled compacted and tested in 12-inch lifts. Surface restoration included concrete, asphalt and grass seed. All work was performed in accordance with New York State Department of Remediation regulations (NYS DER-10).

PRB PILOT STUDY SOIL EXCAVATION & SITE WORK

Southeastern Massachusetts

Client: Confidential

Date: July 2019 – December 2019

Project Highlights

  • Excavation, transport, and disposal via rail of 3,100 tons of impacted soil and sediment.

  • Management, treatment, and disposal of 135,000 gallons of groundwater.

  • Supporting and assisting deep trenching PRB contractor.

Overview

Terra Nova was tasked with site preparation and support for the installation of a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) along the Acushnet River. The site preparation included the installation of sheeted water tight shoring to 35 feet, excavation of 3,100 tons of hazardous impacted soil within the shoring, and management of 135,000 gallons of ground water.  Site restoration prior to the PRB installation included backfilling with low permeable soil and general fill, compaction testing and sheeting removal.  Terra Nova assisted the PRB contractor with equipment assembly and loading, materials management and decontamination. Following PRB installation Terra Nova restored the site using an asphaltic hydraulic barrier.  Challenges to the site work included working in close proximity to the Acushnet River with tidal fluctuations. Terra Nova worked diligently to maintain and enhance the Erosion controls devices through out the Project.

STORM SEWER DRAINAGE SYSTEM

Southeastern Massachusetts

Client: Confidential

Date: June 2019

Project Highlights

  • Approximately 1,600 linear feet of sewer drainage pipe, ranging from 6” to 36” in diameter, inspected and cleaned, along with 8 catch basins and 4 manholes

  • CCTV to inspect before and after stages of remediation

  • High pressure jets to dislodge, move, and clean sediment and debris, which was removed by vacuum truck

Overview

Tasked with removing PCBs from a storm sewer system, Terra Nova Solutions mobilized its resources to clean the site.  Prior to decontamination, an inflatable pipe plug was installed into the drainage pipe for the purpose of containment.  Cleaning was performed with a high pressure jet to dislodge and move debris and sediment toward the working manhole, where it was subsequently collected with a stainless steel vacuum truck.  In total, 12 manholes and catch basins were cleaned using high pressure jets.  Sampling, manifesting, transportation, and disposal of waste were conducted in accordance to all regulations.
