Project Overview

Terra Nova responded to an immediate need for the excavation and repair of a critical tie-back structure associated with an existing remedial system after a drilling contractor drilled through the tie-back . The excavation penetrated an engineered cap consisting of 3 distinct layers of geosynthetic, 60 mil liner, geo-composite drainage layer, and geo-composite clay liner. Each aggregate and the geosynthetic layer of the cap system was carefully removed and stockpiled to provide access to the damaged infrastructure. Once accessed, Terra Nova installed bar lock couplers and a 3-foot-long splice in the tie-back system. After the tie-back was repaired and inspected, Terra Nova replaced and repaired each of the layers as well as performing the repair of the 60-millimeter liner by extrusion welding the seams and performing all required QC testing.

Project Highlights

  • Mechanical repair of existing tie back structure consisting on number #18 bar located beneath and engineered cap at 7 feet below grade

  • Design build project on a major Superfund site adjacent to a large waterway

  • Surgical excavation and restoration of multiple layers of an engineered cap system
